Psalm 23

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4

Trials have a way of stripping us down to the very core of what we believe. They expose whether our faith is rooted in convenience or in conviction. As I have walked through trials in my own life, I always resort to Psalm 23. It reminds me that faith is not about escaping the valley— it’s about going through it with The Lord by our side.

As I have grown up, I have found myself facing seasons where the voices of others tried to define me. Moments of very deep loneliness made me question my worth. Yet, in those moments, I discovered something powerful: God’s presence does NOT vanish in the valley, instead it becomes so much more tangible there. The Rod and The Staff are not just poetic symbols here; they are reminders of His everlasting protection and guidance whenever I feel lost.

Faith in trials is not passive. It is not pretending the pain is not real or forcing a smile when your heart is absolutely crushed. It’s choosing to trust that The Shepherd knows the path ahead even when I cannot see the next step I will take. Psalm 23 begins with green pastures and still waters— the times when life is good and we have little struggle. But, it doesn’t skip the valley. That tension is the reality of our lives— seasons of rest and seasons of struggle, both held together by God’s faithful presence.

When I was going through one of the deepest valleys of my life this past year, everything in me wanted to give up. The weight felt unbearable. I was weak. I was broken. I genuinely felt like there was not a step I could take farther. Yet, even in the darkest of days, I pressed through, and pressing through that season taught me endurance. Faith works the same way. Trials stretch us, strengthen us, and prepare us for the race God has set before us. The truth is, without valleys, we would not know the true depth of His comfort. Valleys are a GIFT!

If you are walking through a trial currently— whether it’s illness, heartbreak, loss, or simply the exhaustion of everyday life— Psalm 23 offers a promise: You are not alone. The shepherd does not abandon His flock. He leads, He restores, He comforts. And when the valley feels endless, He reminds us that goodness and mercy are still chasing us, even when we can’t feel them.

My walks through valleys has taught me that faith in trials is less about asking, “Why Me?” And more about asking, “Where is God leading me through this?”. The valley is not the destination; it’s the passageway. And on the other side, there is a table prepared, a cup overflowing, and a testimony that can encourage others who are still walking in their own valleys.

So, if you find yourself in a season of trial right now, cling to Psalm 23. Whisper it when fear rises, declare it when doubt creeps in, and live it when the valley feels long. The Shepherd is with you, and His presence is enough.
