Count It All Joy

|Mali Clark

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:2–4

Joy and suffering don’t seem like they should belong in the same sentence. When life feels heavy, joy feels distant. Yet, scripture calls us to look at suffering from a new lens: To COUNT IT ALL JOY when we face trials. Not because pain is pleasant, but because suffering is an opportunity. It’s a place where God shapes us, strengthens us, and prepares us for more than we could ever imagine.

I have lived through seasons in my life where suffering felt like a thief. Rejection and loneliness tried to steal my identity and silence my voice. But, in those moments, I discovered something so deep: suffering can be a teacher. It reveals the cracks in our strength, and points us to the One who is unshakable.

James reminds us in the verses above that trials produce perseverance. Perseverance isn’t glamorous— it’s the daily choice to keep walking when the valley feels endless. It is the decision to trust God’s goodness when circumstances feel like you should do otherwise. And over time, perseverance  matures us. It pushes away fear and pride, leaving behind a faith that is genuine, resilient, and complete.

One of my favorite songs is Still Waters. This song has carried me through dark season because the words in it have reminded me that the Shepherd leads us beside still waters, even when the path winds through shadows. This song has became an anthem in my life that invites me to lean into His presence more fully.

Suffering is an opportunity because it shifts our perspective. It teaches us to value what truly matters, When it has felt like everything has been stripped from my life in times past and it felt like all I had left was God, it required me to force me to ask myself: “Where is my hope anchored?” For me, the answer has always come back to Christ. He is the joy in the midst of sorrow, the light in the darkest valley, and the strength when I am weak.

James 1 offers everyone a promise: Your suffering is not wasted. Every tear, every prayer, and every step forward only pushes you to become a stronger person, and, even better, a stronger Christian.

My journey has taught me that joy in the suffering is not about denying pain. It’s about redefining it. Trials are opportunities. An opportunity to grow. An opportunity to trust. An opportunity to discover God’s faithfulness in new ways.

I invite you to count everything in your life as joy. The trial is not easy, but the God who walks with you is faithful. The moments of rejection or redirection are even more vital than the times when everything seems to fall into place. Those closed doors and detours are often the very place where character is refined. They remind us that joy is not found in getting what we want, but in trusting the Lord knows where we need to go.
